Asthma health program encouraging women to make the call
Asthma Australia is encouraging women with asthma in the ACT to step into a healthier version of themselves simply by making a call to 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) and checking their eligibility for The COACH Program®.
Asthma Australia has recently added the AUSDRISK screening tool to The COACH Program®, which already offers comprehensive and individualised care, and can now help women to avoid a high likelihood of developing type 2 or gestational diabetes.
Women with asthma account for 13.9 per cent of the ACT population and are 1.3 times more likely to experience risk factors leading to type 2 diabetes, which include smoking, an unhealthy diet, risky alcohol consumption and low levels of physical activity.
The COACH Program® is a free clinically proven over the phone health service which covers the essentials of asthma and asthma self-management, and focuses on a person’s lifestyle, behaviours and medical history. People are enrolled by a treating healthcare professional or an Asthma Educator.
Asthma Australia CEO Michele Goldman said thousands of people benefit from speaking with an Asthma Australia Asthma Educator each year.
“The COACH Program® is a six-month program, personalised and tailored to the individual’s needs and medical history to support their health in the best way possible,” Ms Goldman said.
“The addition of the AUSDRISK screening tool means we can offer further support to women to live healthier lives by looking at risk of type 2 and gestational diabetes.”
Enrolment in The COACH Program® has seen significant health gains for Canberran, Kelly Anne Tranent, who has a family history of diabetes and joined the program following an asthma attack.
“I have a family history of type 2 diabetes and my Asthma Educator was able to explain the link between diabetes and asthma and helped me identify where I can make lifestyle changes to help reduce my risk,” Ms Tranent said.
“During the COVID-19 lockdown I was quite anxious, and my Asthma Educator encouraged me to go for walks to keep active. Her advice really helped to improve my mental health during this time.
“The program was the subtle push I needed to get on top of my asthma and overall health.”
This program is supported by the ACT Government under the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program. It is being delivered in collaboration with Diabetes NSW & ACT. Asthma Australia began screening for diabetes risk as a part of The COACH Program® in December 2019.
