Want to be an Asthma Smart Community School in Wollongong?

An Asthma Smart Community School is where staff, students and parents:

  • Know and understand asthma
  • Know Asthma First Aid and help each other if someone has a flare-up
  • Have school procedures that make managing asthma easy

It’s a community where kids and adults with asthma feel safe and supported.

Benefits of an Asthma Smart Community School:

  • Free Asthma First Aid training for staff members online
  • Greater knowledge around asthma for students (and/or parents)
  • Breathe Better in the Gong pack:

  • An Asthma Emergency Kit plus a voucher for the reliever medicine to complete it
  • Asthma Smart Community Champion T-shirts – 5 for student Champions and 2 for adult Champions
  • A free asthma information session for students and/or parents

The first 10 schools to become an Asthma Smart Community School will also receive a $500 BONUS

To receive the $500 your school must complete the following steps:

  • Nominate a staff member to be the contact for the project
  • Choose up to 2 staff and 5 children to be Asthma Smart Community Champions for the duration of the project (they receive a t-shirt) who will be trained in asthma basics and Asthma First Aid
  • Complete the Schools Asthma Health Check – a simple online ‘asthma management readiness tool’
  • Host an asthma information session provided by Asthma Australia for students and parents
  • Host 2 workshops facilitated by the Asthma Australia team, one with school staff (and at least the adult Asthma Smart Community Champions), and one for parents, to discuss ‘Managing Asthma in Your School: Challenges and Supports’ to help address any issues in your school.

These activities should be completed within the next 12 months. Keen to learn more or be a part of the project? Contact Michelle Davis on mdavis@asthma.org.au
