Asthma Australia is calling on Australia’s young researchers in respiratory health to apply for our Peter Van Asperen Career Development Grant

We invite early career researchers to apply for one of three Peter Van Asperen Career Development Grants, worth up to $2,000 each.

Over the past ten years the Asthma Australia National Asthma Research Program has resulted in significant contributions to important discovery science, clinical, and population health research projects, as well as PhD Scholarships and research fellowships to promote emerging researchers in the field.

Asthma Australia is dedicated to contributing to vital asthma research to realise our vision of a community free of asthma. An important step towards this is supporting upcoming researchers to further their career and continue their contributions to asthma research.

Asthma Australia is happy to announce an opportunity for early career researchers to apply for one of three, $2,000 Career Development Grants. Asthma Australia invites applicants to apply for these grants to be used for professional development activities. This includes, but is not limited to, publication fees, online training events, consumables or grant writing assistance. Applicants may apply for these funds to cover a combination of activities.

Grant Type Peter Van Asperen Career Development Grant
Priority Area Funds must be used in a way that is relevant and/or contribute to asthma research or the translation/dissemination of asthma research.

Applicants do not have to address a specific Asthma Australia priority area (prevention, vulnerable groups, environmental impact, models of care/support, or influencing policy).

Eligibility Applicants must

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be a PhD candidate or has a PhD that was awarded up to five years previously (relative to opportunity)
  • Applying for funding for activities which will develop their career in asthma research (for example publication feeds, online training event, consumables for a project or grant writing assistance).

Applicants must submit the completed application form and a CV. Supervisor reports and independent referee reports are not required.

Application process
  • Complete the National Asthma Research Program Career Development Application form and submit to research@asthma.org.au by the closing date.
  • Eligible applications will be reviewed and evaluated by Asthma Australia’s Research Advisory Committee or delegate/s. All applications are assessed against a standardised assessment criteria (see below)
  • Successful applications will be endorsed by the CEO
  • Decision about funding will be announced in February

The assessment criteria includes the following breakdown:

  • Impact of career development activities (50%)
  • Asthma impact (30%)
  • Academic record and research achievement (20%)
Reporting expectations Brief report detailing the work/ activity that the grant contributed to (template provided).
Affiliation and acknowledge Successful applicants must ensure (wherever possible) Asthma Australia’s contribution and support of the work is acknowledged in publications or presentations related to the research.
