This year, Asthma Australia and the Mental Health Council of Tasmania have joined forces to launch a new campaign, ‘Take a minute’, highlighting the often-overlooked connection between asthma management and mental wellbeing.
Living with asthma can bring ongoing stress, worry about flare-ups and feelings of uncertainty – particularly when symptoms are difficult to control. Community consultations have shown that anxiety, depression, stigma and apprehension are common experiences for people with asthma.
When asthma is uncontrolled, symptoms can disrupt sleep, cause fatigue and make it harder to take part in everyday activities like exercise, work or social events. Over time, these challenges can contribute to isolation and reduced wellbeing.
In 2026, we will help deliver ‘Take a minute for your asthma’ – a simple and practical initiative designed to support people living with asthma to take small daily steps toward better asthma control and improved mental health.
The campaign builds on the Mental Health Council of Tasmania’s original research–backed ‘Take a minute’ campaign, first released in 2022, which encouraged Tasmanians to take a proactive approach to mental wellbeing through everyday tools and small actions.
‘Take a minute for your asthma’ guides participants through daily prompts over five days, helping them reflect on what matters most for their health, discover supportive tools and build confidence in managing asthma day-to-day.
The campaign is a reminder that looking after asthma isn’t only about preventing symptoms, it’s also about supporting overall wellbeing and living positively with the condition.
Taking just a few minutes each day can be a meaningful step toward better asthma management and stronger mental health.
