Welcome!

Thank you for taking some time to complete the Schools Asthma Health Check – you will only need about 10 minutes or so to go through it.

The Schools Asthma Health Check is designed to help schools review and evaluate their asthma management readiness.

It is based upon the satisfaction of key recommendations that both support and enhance student, staff and visitor asthma management daily and in the event of an asthma emergency.

The Schools Asthma Health Check will provide targeted feedback, recommendations for consideration and guide schools towards additional resources and tools as required.

The School Asthma Health Check is based upon satisfying five key recommendations that support school asthma management.

1. Asthma Management Policy

2. Training

3. Plans

4. Equipment

5. Promotion

Let's see how your school ranks in these categories.

Asthma Management Policy

We recommend that each school have an active and current asthma management policy that is:

  • Accessible to all staff
  • Understood by all staff
  • Actioned by the school
Q1. Does your school have an asthma management policy that is accessible, understood and actioned?(Required)

Staff Training in Asthma First Aid

We recommend that school staff are trained in asthma management and emergency asthma first aid.

School staff can access training that teaches them how to administer medication in the event of an asthma emergency. The training linked below includes the provision of an individual certificate of participation for your school records.

Some states and territories also require specific accredited training to be completed by staff with a direct student wellbeing responsibility, those working with students with a history of severe asthma or within a higher risk subject area.

Q2. Have all relevant staff at your School completed a suitable course in Asthma First Aid management?(Required)

Student Asthma Plans

Anyone with asthma should have a current Asthma Action Plan that they complete with their doctor.

Asthma Action Plans are an integral part of asthma management and help people with asthma and those around them to be more aware of worsening symptoms and provide clear instructions on what to do in the case of an emergency.

A copy of an Asthma Action Plans should be provided to the school by the student’s parents or carers at least annually, or when there is a change to medication, lifestyle, symptoms or their asthma management process.

You can find an Asthma Action Plan template here to provide to your students and their parents or carers.

Q3. Does your School actively encourage parents and carers to provide a copy of a current student asthma plan at least annually?(Required)

Asthma Management Equipment

We recommend schools provide and maintain a minimum of at least two Asthma Emergency Kits or similar.

You can purchase Asthma Emergency Kits here from our website

Having two kits allows schools to have one on-site and one ready for off-site excursions as needed.

A standard Asthma Emergency Kit or similar contains:

  • reliever medication
  • at least two single-person use spacer devices
  • a log sheet for recording incident details and medication use, and
  • clear written instructions on equipment use and asthma first aid steps

Other considerations for the number of Asthma Emergency Kits are:

  • the physical size and layout of the school,
  • the number of students and staff,
  • relative accessibility to the equipment and
  • level of environmental risk.

Note that reliever medication is only available through a pharmacy.

Q4. Does your School provide and maintain a minimum of at least two Asthma Emergency Kits or similar?(Required)

Asthma Management Promotion

We recommend schools promote asthma management to students, staff, parents and carers, to increase overall community knowledge, skills and confidence in asthma management and Asthma First Aid emergency response.

A range of promotional resources and tools are available for school use, including:

  • Asthma First Aid Poster that can be downloaded and placed in visible areas
  • Asthma in Education Newsletter that is a free digital publication where we talk all things asthma within the school setting
  • Asthma Action Plans for Students that can be provided to parents and caregivers
  • Asthma Apps
  • Asthma information resources such as brochures and fact sheets
  • 1800 ASTHMA Phone Service where qualified Asthma Educators can answer any asthma questions you may have
Q5. Does your School promote asthma management to students, staff, parents and carers?(Required)
