Asthma Australia and the Mental Health Council of Tasmania have joined forces to launch the ‘Take a minute for your asthma’ campaign that encourages people with asthma to discover the tools that will help them better manage their asthma and in turn improve their mental health.
Asthma Australia is a foundation partner of the Mental Health Council of Tasmania’s original research-backed ‘Take a minute’ campaign released in 2022 and is delivering ‘Take a minute for your asthma’ for the first time in 2026.
‘Take a minute for your Asthma’ will help people focus on the short, easy steps that can lead them towards good asthma management, mental wellbeing and positive living.
Participants in the asthma campaign will use prompts each day for five days to discover what truly matters for their health and wellbeing when living with asthma.
Asthma Australia spokesperson Jess Tyler says people with asthma worry about their health and future flare ups, are prevented from doing the things they want to do and are feeling trapped by their condition.
“When we talked to people about what life is like with asthma in a recent community consultation, anxiety, depression, worry, stigma and apprehension are common in people with asthma. Many people with poor mental health also experience asthma.
“When asthma is uncontrolled, waking up at night and early morning due to asthma symptoms can leave a person feeling tired during the day. Having uncontrolled asthma can make it harder to join in with everyday activities, such as playing sport and other recreational interests. This can lead to feeling unmotivated and socially isolated and negatively impact a person’s wellbeing.
“The short, easy steps that are part of ‘Take a minute for your asthma’ can help empower participants, leading them towards good asthma management, mental wellbeing and positive living,” she said.
Mental Health Council of Tasmania CEO, Dan Vautin said “Mental health campaigns have traditionally focused on recognising when things aren’t going well, and how to respond when that happens. ‘Take a minute’ flips the script and gives us tools to help prevent us from becoming unwell in the first place.
“We created ‘Take a minute’ to encourage Tasmanians to take a proactive approach to their mental wellbeing, instead of waiting until they notice something is wrong before taking action. Given the links between physical and mental health, we’re excited that Asthma Australia is leaning into the campaign to help remind us that looking after our physical health also has a positive impact on our mental wellbeing.”
