ABOUT US
Asthma is a respiratory condition that affects nearly 2.8 million Australians, with children being the most impacted. Asthma is responsible for at least one Australian death every day, making it a serious health concern. In 2022-23, over 31,000 people were hospitalised due to asthma, yet more than 90% of these hospitalisations were potentially preventable.
Despite the prevalence of asthma, it is often misunderstood, causing fear and anxiety for those living with the condition.
However, there is hope.
Asthma Australia has been the leading charity for people with asthma and their communities for over 60 years.
The challenges of climate change, unhealthy air, and health inequity make it more important than ever for people with asthma to have a voice. We search for new and progressive approaches to challenge the status quo. Our work is grounded in evidence and centred on the experiences of people affected by asthma. We believe by listening to those living with asthma, designing solutions with them, and influencing change, people with asthma can live freely, unrestricted by their asthma.
OUR PURPOSE
To help people breathe better so they can live freely
We work with people who live with asthma, their families and communities, government and policy makers and a network of partners across the domains of health, social services and the environment.
We drive change through deeply understanding the lived experience of people with asthma and delivering person-centred services. We partner to disrupt and influence system-level transformation.
As a result of our work people with asthma are empowered to take control of their asthma, have access to services which meet their needs, and live in environments that support them to reach their full potential and live freely.
Asthma Australia is a change agent, accelerating, guiding and navigating a movement that changes the way chronic health conditions are managed. As a result of our work, a new approach is emerging – one that delivers positive impacts for people with asthma.
OUR VISION
No one experiences a life restricted by asthma
At Asthma Australia we are committed to halving the number of potentially preventable asthma hospitalisations by 2030.
In 2022-23, over 31,000 people were hospitalised due to asthma, yet more than 90% of these hospitalisations were potentially preventable.
We want everyone in the community to understand asthma so they can help if they are in an emergency situation.
We want to challenge the way we do things now, to keep improving asthma prevention and treatment outcomes for people with asthma.
We will challenge and we will bring our imagination to creating a better tomorrow.
At Asthma Australia, we help people to breathe. And you can help, too.
