Do you recall the days when asthma was a whispered fear? Lurking in the shadows… never knowing when it would strike. When each wheeze felt like a haunting reminder of how precious and fragile life is?
Meg remembers… the fear of not knowing what might happen. The trauma of hospital visits. And the never-ending battle against a disease that was intent on stealing her breath away.
Meg can’t remember a life without asthma. As a little girl, she couldn’t exercise without having an asthma flare-up that could last weeks. Meg loved being outside. But her childhood was burdened by having constant triggers and flare-ups.
Years later, asthma was still stopping Meg from living freely. Meg had to give up her job as a teacher because of her severe asthma. Dusty and mouldy classrooms, and constant colds were triggering daily flare-ups. These led to lung infections, sending her to hospital countless times. When she was pregnant with her son, Walter, her asthma worsened. It was the sickest she had ever been. It was a horrendous experience. Asthma put her in the hospital constantly while she was pregnant. Meg said, asthma even dictated the size of her family.
“I’ve only got one child because I was so sick with asthma in pregnancy.
Asthma is a deadly, dangerous condition. We can’t afford to be complacent. It’s such a debilitating disease.”
But in the darkness, there was hope. A ray of light that came in the form of an Asthma Educator from Asthma Australia. In a 40-minute phone call that changed her life, Meg found new options for treating her asthma. Finally, she found relief from the suffocating grip of her condition.
“Asthma Australia help the community understand what asthma is. The services they provide are important, especially today when people are struggling to access healthcare services.”
Too many families still grapple with the trauma of asthma attacks and hospital visits. 462 people in Australia died because of asthma in 2022. There is still an urgent need for increased support and advocacy. I’m sure you’ll agree stories like Meg’s show we need a cure for asthma.
