Many people in Queensland with asthma can now get fast and easy care at their local community pharmacy. This is because trained and authorised pharmacists can now do more to help.
In some parts of Queensland, community pharmacists can support people aged 16–65 years who have mild to moderate asthma. This is part of the Improved Asthma Symptom Control Program, delivered through the Queensland Community Pharmacy Chronic Conditions Management Pilot. The goal is to make primary health care easier to get, especially in regional and rural areas.
Pharmacists are trusted health professionals. With this clinical training, pharmacists can provide more asthma support in your community.
These trained pharmacists can:
- Check your symptoms (including at your first visit or at a follow-up visit).
- Create or update your asthma management plan.
- Check your inhaler technique and show you how to use it correctly.
- Follow up with you and work with your usual doctor and other health professionals if needed.
Until 30 June 2026, consultations in this program are fully subsidised. You can book a subsidised consultation at a participating pharmacy for asthma advice and support. You will still need to pay the full cost of any medicines that are prescribed and dispensed.
This means you can get asthma support from a participating community pharmacist as well as your regular doctor. It may help you get care sooner and closer to home.
To find a participating pharmacy near you, visit https://findapharmacy.com.au/queensland-scope and choose “Pharmacist Consultations“ or “Pharmacist Practitioner consults” from the Service drop-down menu.
