Research Grant – Systems failures impacting children with asthma in New South Wales

Asthma Australia is dedicated to contributing to vital asthma research to realise our vision of finding solutions to reduce the impact of asthma and we are excited to announce a new grant funding opportunity.

We invite applications to access $75,000 per year over 2 years to fund work aimed at addressing the systems failures impacting children with asthma in New South Wales.

Asthma exerts great burden on children with asthma in Australia. The most recent Burden of Disease data again reveals that asthma was the leading cause of disease burden among Australian children up to the age of 14.

Put simply, asthma is affecting how children sleep, play, learn, and enjoy daily life, which makes it a big challenge for both children, and their families. The reasons for this are manifold, and span the socio-ecological layers, and this grant aims to fund solutions that address the systems failures contributing to this burden.

For children with asthma in NSW;

  • What solutions may be effective at addressing the systems failures that contribute to increased risk and urgent health service use among children with asthma in NSW?

Modifiable risk factors affecting children with asthma include environmental triggers, exposure to smoke or poor indoor air quality, delayed diagnosis or follow-up, incorrect inhaler technique, poor access to written asthma action plans, medication adherence barriers, connection between healthcare and community, caregiver education and confidence, or fragmented transitions between health, school, family and community services. The system is not responding to these issues.

Applicants should be clear on the system failures they’re proposing to address as part of their application (see grant guidelines, assessment criteria 1 – project details). The aim of this grant is to fund a high-quality, consumer-informed research project that develops, adapts, and evaluates an intervention to reduce modifiable systems failures that allow the risk factors to impact children’s, and their families, lives. Projects may include implementation, translation, feasibility, pilot, mixed-methods, or evaluation research.

This grant relates to National Asthma Research Agenda (NARA) priorities 1 (Asthma in Children) and 3 (Asthma care and self-management). Asthma Australia is ready to work with teams who are best equipped to answer these questions in meaningful ways.

Total Amount Available One grant, up to $150,000 over 2 years. Year two funding is strictly dependent on year one work being delivered on time.
Eligibility To be eligible for this grant, you need to propose work that improves outcomes for people with children with asthma in NSW.

Further, applications will be accepted from universities, research institutes and other private companies including social businesses and social innovators.
