As a foundation partner of the Mental Health Council of Tasmania’s Take a minute campaign, Asthma Australia is delivering the Take a Minute for your Asthma Challenge – a joint campaign focusing on the short, easy steps that empower people with asthma towards good asthma management, mental wellbeing and positive living.

The Tasmanian Asthma Discovery Project and Asthma Australia’s own insights reveal that people with asthma worry about their health and future flare ups, are prevented from doing the things they want to do and are feeling trapped in their condition. Anxiety, depression, worry, stigma and apprehension are common in people with asthma and many people with poor mental health also experience asthma.

When asthma is uncontrolled, waking up at night and early morning due to asthma symptoms can leave a person feeling tired during the day. Having uncontrolled asthma can make it harder to join in with everyday activities, such as playing sport and other recreational interests. This can lead to feeling unmotivated and socially isolated as well as anxiety and depression.

Research shows us that taking a proactive, preventative approach to your mental health can help you live a happier, healthier, more productive and fulfilling life. That’s what Take a minute is all about!

Using prompts and photos each day for 5 days, participants will discover what truly matters for their health and wellbeing. These short, easy steps will empower participants towards good asthma management, mental wellbeing and positive living.

The daily prompts are research evidence based from MHCoT’s research partnership and have a formal syntax that is aligned to behaviour change principles.

Together, the challenges help participants understand their unique answer to the question, “What is essential for my health and wellbeing?”
