Asthma Australia is calling for applications for a PhD scholarship grant

We invite early career researchers whose research interest is in the area of childhood/young people and asthma to apply for a 3-year research scholarship worth $45,000 per year.

Over the past several decades the Asthma Australia National Asthma Research Program has resulted in significant contributions to important discovery science, clinical, and population health research projects, as well as PhD Scholarships and research fellowships to promote emerging researchers in the field.

Asthma Australia is committed to continuing this work investing in vital asthma research to realise our vision of a community free of asthma. That’s why, due to the generous donation from Figurehead construction, we would like to invite early career researchers in Australia whose research interest is in the area of childhood/young people and asthma to apply for a 3-year research scholarship worth $45,000 per year.

Asthma in young children is one of the most common causes of hospital admission and visits to the doctor. In 2017-18, there were nearly 40,000 admissions to the hospital for asthma, of which nearly half (44%) were children aged 0-14 years old. Asthma is the leading cause of burden of disease for children aged 5-14 years old, and a particularly difficult challenge for teenagers, reducing young people’s ability to participate in everyday activities like their peers.

Australian families, like the Kennedy family, know the impact of asthma on young people all too well. At just 13 years of age, their daughter Zoe had experienced several trips to the Emergency Department each year. Her friends would describe her asthma as severe. On 19 June 2020, the Kennedy Family and their friends lost the beautiful, vibrant, sporty and social Zoe Kennedy. The Kennedy family and their friends at Figurehead construction want to this situation avoided in the future and have made a generous commitment to fund a PhD scholarship through Asthma Australia towards this.

Have you been touched by asthma? Are you on a pathway in your career towards relieving the burden experienced by young Australians by their asthma? Do you agree that we should all breathe easily so we can live freely?

If you are a PhD candidate and have been sitting on a great research idea around asthma in young people, Asthma Australia invites you to apply for this PhD scholarship.
