We invite Australia’s early career researchers to apply for one of two PhD top-up scholarships to the value of $45,000 over three years to support researchers aiming to improve lives of people with asthma.

Asthma Australia is dedicated to supporting upcoming researchers interested in the field of asthma. We want to work with the next generation of asthma researchers whose work will improve the lives of people with asthma.  

We are therefore delighted to announce this opportunity for current or future PhD scholars to apply for funding to support their living or project expenses.  

About the funding

Asthma Australia is opening applications for two PhD Top-up scholarships to support future PhD studies. This is available to students who aim to apply for a PhD scholarship from another institution/organisation for their PhD studies with a focus on one of Asthma Australia’s priorities, as described below. This will be provided as a stipend payment of $15,000 / year for 3 years.

Priority Area Applicants’ PhD project must address / relate to one of the following research priorities:  

  • Further evidence and understanding about the factors which contribute to asthma remission in childhood, as well as what influences recurrence  
  • Further evidence about how asthma affects developmental milestones in children  
  • Characterise the challenges faced by some people with asthma when wearing masks to protect themselves from COVID-19 
  • Understanding how COVID infection impacts the health of people with asthma in the long term 
  • Tools, techniques, methods, innovations that are more effective at educating people with asthma 
  • Strategies that may improve access to quality healthcare for people in disadvantaged communities  
  • Strategies that improve parents identify and respond to signs and symptoms of asthma attacks  
  • Further evidence about the relationship between symptom recognition and severity of asthma attacks

Total Amount Available $15,000 / year for three years (excl. GST)
Project Duration 3 years
Project Start Date Project expected to commence by trimester/semester 1 2024, unless discussed prior with Asthma Australia  
  • Applicant must be commencing their PhD by trimester/semester 1 2024 
  • Applicant will be in receipt of a base scholarship from another institution/organisation by trimester/semester 1 2024

The successful applicant will receive a grant agreement/contract from Asthma Australia. This is expected to be returned to Asthma Australia within one month. The offer may lapse if both parties do not sign the grant agreement within this time.
